Sibling Artisty – A Thin Line between Love and Paint

You should see my head – I feel as if a myriad ideas are bursting out of it and some I catch and others I don’t.  (I hope the good ones I don’t catch make their way into someone else’s head who will, in turn, nurture and use them.)  One idea came about during a fun conversation with my two siblings.  Although I was involved in the talk, I stepped back and saw us as a fly on the wall would.  The conversation was going round robin – lightly teasing one another, calling each other’s bluff, laughing out loud, rolling our eyes at one another, praising one another, two ganging up on one and then — lightning quick! — the allegiances changed…and so on and so forth.  I thought if I could capture these moments and simultaneously add topics that were a subject of interest to DIYers and Pros, that maybe this would be something interesting to listen to.  So was born Sibling Artistry, the Faux Podcasts.

The Sibling Artistry podcast series — like an online radio show – is a feature of the newly redesigned House of Faux website and right now, you can see the home page prior to the recordings being uploaded.  Sibling Artistry is a play on words from sibling rivalry.  We also gave the podcasts a motto: A Thin Line Between Love and Paint.  Since my brother, sister and I work together and still see each other socially, there is a slim division between love (family) and paint (the business) for us.  We also made two variations: a Pro series (for the professional faux finishers and entrepreneurs) and the DIY series (for the DIYers who want to learn about decorative painting).  Each of us have different perspectives, strengths and responsibilities…and we all love to talk. The topics will run from creating artistic works to managing a business.  We’ve learned a lot throughout the years and sharing our experiences sounded like a cool idea.

We got together this past weekend to record our first two podcasts: (1) the Pro Series: Marketing & Promotions and (2) the DIY series: All About Glazes.   Wow, that was hard.  You can’t imagine the amount of “uhmms”, “you know?-s”, off-topic tangents and dead silences we had going on.  (After one of those silences during the conversation, my brother Jason said “Aw-kward!” which at least loosened all of us a bit.)  It’s hard to not remember the microphones are there plus there’s others looking at you from a mixing board and giving advice/directions.  I trust that in time we’ll get better.  Once they are uploaded, I’ll give you a heads up and you can listen in.  Please feel free to give us comments, topic ideas and feedback on the idea itself.  Yes, even “I think it’s an awful idea!”, or “What the heck is a podcast?!?” and “We’ll just see if you’re interesting to listen to…” will be taken into consideration, LOL!  Have a great day!

  1. Oh wonderful! I can’t wait to listen. I am a guest speaker on a radio show in KC every once in awhile. Here is what I’ve learned. A) You never sounds as bad as you think you do. B) Just don’t listen to it after it’s recorded. You’ll pick yourself apart.

    I do the same thing on my blog. I type… I retype… I reretype….It’s so frustrating!

I bet it sounds awesome and I can’t wait to listen in!

    Blessings,

Regina, honey, do you ever sleep??? :-) This sounds very interesting and I look forward to hearing the podcasts! I love listening to podcasts on my little Shuffle while I work. I’m big on the NPR podcasts, but I just know the Sibling Artistry podcasts will be one of my favorites to download. Keep us posted!

I do sleep somewhat, LOL! It helps that I don’t run my business alone — that would be really tough and I commend anyone who does it. Thank you both for your feedback and advice! (Jen – I retype a lot, too…)

  4. [...] Quite a bit ago, I told you about the Sibling Artistry podcasts. Well — it definitely took a bit but we finally got them edited and up on the wonderful House of Faux site.  The premiere broadcasts features a three-part series on Marketing & Promotion for Artists.  They will also be available on the Talk Faux forum and the Art Fusion networking site.  We hope you take a listen, leave a comment and/or give us feedback here.
