What’s in the Window

December 6, 2010 7 Comments by Regina

I worked in New York City for quite a few years and miss it terribly. The action, the hours, the people, the fashion, the drive, the arts and the energy all speak to my soul. I enjoyed every season there but especially the Winter Holidays. One of the places I worked at was EMI Records and we used to all gather next to the floor-to-ceiling windows to see the tree lighting at Rockefeller Center within the warmth of the building. Perfect view upon the tree, the ice rink and the streets. I didn’t appreciate how special those times were back then.

During the Holidays, many stores design their windows in an incredible manner. Having a different theme each year, the best of these is Bergdorf Goodman. It’s theatre mixed with fantasy mixed with cutting edge fashion mixed with über-creativity. In fact, it’s all summed up in this quote by David Hoey, Bergdorf’s Director of Visual Presentation: “We’re drawn to extremes here. Minimalism is great. Maximalism is, too. What we avoid is medium-ism.” Yes, please!

Take a peek at this year’s windows:

Windows at Bergdorf Goodman, photographed by Ricky Zehavi and John Cordes, details the best of a decade’s windows. It’s been named one of the best design books of the season by New York Magazine. You can’t help but be drawn into their dreamy, confection of a world. Even Tony Duquette inspired the 2007 windows. Here are some of the past windows:

The topiaries are macaroons!

In this short video, you can see David Hoey himself giving a behind-the-scenes glimpse for the 2009 season. I find all of them completely inspiring and completely original – artistry sui generis. I want what’s in the window! You?

I think this is one of my fave posts that I’ve put together ever. So much fun to see varied bits and pieces of different arts come together.
