The Deets: Vahallan Papers (& a Giveaway!)

May 4, 2011 19 Comments by Regina

The Deets is a series that takes a product out on the market and provides fast details: What It Is, What It Does and Where to Get It. We continue with Vahallan Papers, a hand-crafted paper line I discovered a few years ago.  We’ve used it in a few installations and it never fails to please. It’s easy to install — just roll on a bit of wallpaper paste and position the papers to create your design.  Also, be sure to read on to the end for details on our Giveaway!

What It Is: Established in 1997, Vahallan Papers produces hand-crafted papers that are artistic and come in quite a variety of designs.  The substrate they are painted on resist normal wear and tear but if there is damage sustained, the touch-ups are fairly easy to fix.  Since they are created upon placing an order, the turnaround time is 15 days, although they do have a “Rush” option.  The papers do not come in rolls, rather in the shapes and sizes that are custom ordered and are sold by the square foot.  No special training is required to install the papers.

What It Does: The papers create an artistic pattern on the walls using their custom cuts: squares/diamonds, symmetric and assymetric blocks, circles and/or torn paper.  It is meant to be applied with wallpaper paste and along with the shape, the size of the designs is also customizable.  A repair kit is supplied with each order.  The papers can be installed in bathrooms with air vents and they are also washable/cleanable.  Their website has a great Inspiration Gallery and Vahallan has created a useful video giving guidance on both ordering and installing the paper.

Where To Get It: The papers can be ordered directly from the Vahallan studio in Lincoln, NE, as well as through U.S. dealers and International dealers.  When ordering, they suggest having a 30% overage to cover the waste factor.  They recently unveiled their newly reformatted 2011 sample book, containing over 100 collected patterns and 15 new patterns in a beautifully finished book.  Please contact them to obtain individual pricing for the sample book. They also have a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

I love that 2nd picture! While I had heard of Vahallan years ago, I never realized the paper doesn’t come in rolls but in presized sheets. Aside from the math involved, I like that it’s already in puzzle pieces for assembly.

I love this company. They take all of the hardest work out of handmade paper. I remember the days when I made this from scratch in my back yard. It is much easier to just order it from them.
