Seeing the Extraordinary in the Ordinary

June 24, 2011 8 Comments by Regina

Tape is just an ordinary material, right? We use it, we abuse it, we remove it, we discard it. However, some see it in a whole other way. I first wrote about Scottish artist Jim Lambie back in 2008. He takes brightly colored pieces of vinyl tape and creates stop-in-your-tracks art installations.  I decided to look him up again and found that he is still kicking his creative vibe.  Take a look.

There are plenty of videos that showcase interviews with Mr. Lambie, including some from the exhibitions held so far this year.  But I still think the following video from 2008 is one of the better ones to see how it all comes together.  You can also see a quick blog post on how he and his team prepare for a show.

Apartment Therapy did a feature on one of his residential installations.  (Looks amazing!)  There is also a book available which showcases some of his art pieces.  Whether or not you consider his work Art, there’s not denying that it starts a conversation.  I think it takes a special talent to look at something non-intrusive and create a showstopping piece with it.  His work radiates energy to me and I’m happy to see it.  You?  Have a great weekend!
